Essex County by Jeff Lemire
Essex County is a trilogy of graphic novels by Canadian author Jeff Lemire. In a presentation for Curmudgeon's Corner: The Comic Book Syndicate, Jeff Lemire, in explaining how he became a graphic novelist, sums up the trilogy this way:
Somehow this little story of a kid, sort of like me, growing up on the farm became a multigenerational saga of one family over the course of 70 years starting to deal with loss, guilt and memory and imagination and most importantly, it is just about family.

I first heard of this book in 2010 when it was 1 of 5 books being debated as the "most essential" book of the decade in CBC Canada Read's contest. It was championed by musician Sara Quinn from Tegan and Sara. Because of Sara's vigourous defence of the book and my own rural background --I grew up on a dairy farm around St. Thomas, Ontario -- I read it and was introduced to the rich literary experience of graphic novels.
I am very proud to represent graphic novels in the online book club experience in FFP and I look forward to reading Essex County with you.
